Neeraj Jain: Building Capacity for Better Haemoglobinopathy Care in Maharashtra

Neeraj Jain, Director Growth Operations for Asia, Middle East and Europe (AMEE) at PATH, shared on LinkedIn:

”Strengthening equitable and integrated care for haemoglobinopathies requires sustained investments in both systems and people.

In that spirit, a 2-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop at AIIMS Nagpur (March 27–28) was concluded, which focused on advancing patient-centered haemoglobinopathy care across Maharashtra.

Led by PATH, in collaboration with the Public Health Department of Maharashtra and AIIMS Nagpur (COC), and supported by the BMS Foundation, whose mission is to improve global health, the workshop brought together clinicians and public health professionals from across the state.

Some key highlights:

  • State-level momentum: Launch of the State Action Plan and IEC materials for Thalassemia, Sickle Cell Disease, and Hemophilia
  • Clinical strengthening: Focused sessions on screening, diagnosis, HPLC interpretation, and disease management
  • Prevention focus: Genetic counseling, prenatal screening, and safe blood practices as critical enablers
  • Systems approach: Strengthening data use (NSCAEM portal) and District Day Care Centres
  • Emerging care pathways: Updates in hemophilia care, anchored in patient-centered approaches

Grateful to our funders, partners, and expert faculty from the Public Health Department of Maharashtra, AIIMS Nagpur, ICMR institutes, and the PATH team for driving this forward.

Initiatives like Ek Paul Thalassemia Muktikade (Step towards Thalassemia Elimination) initiative reinforce that meaningful progress will come from aligning policy, systems, and community action.”
