Congratulations to Sandy Middleton for Taking the 2026 HESTA Australian Nursing and Midwifery Awards – Stroke Foundation
Stroke Foundation shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Stroke Foundation extends our sincere congratulations to Distinguished Professor Sandy Middleton (Australian Catholic University) on being one of the outstanding finalists for the 2026 HESTA Australian Nursing and Midwifery Awards – a wonderful and well-deserved recognition.
There are currently over 440,000 Australians and millions of people worldwide living with stroke.
Research that changes stroke outcomes for those patients deserves to be celebrated.
Dist. Prof Sandy Middleton led the landmark QASC Trial (of which Stroke Foundation was also a partner), which demonstrated that nurse-led protocols for managing fever, hyperglycaemia and swallowing difficulties (FeSS) after stroke reduced death and dependency at 90 days by 16%.
Today, those FeSS Protocols are part of clinical guidelines in Australia and 18 countries around the world.
With more than USD 104 million in research funding secured, over 260 peer-reviewed publications, and a deep commitment to mentoring the next generation of clinician researchers, Dist. Prof Middleton has elevated the role of nursing in driving better outcomes for stroke patients and their families.
The HESTA Australian Nursing and Midwifery Awards recognise the vital contributions of nurses, midwives, nurse educators, researchers, and personal care workers who improve health outcomes through exemplary care and support.
Established by the health industry super fund HESTA, the awards highlight individuals and organisations making a real difference in patient care and community health.
Congratulations again to Dist. Prof Sandy Middleton and all of the accomplished and well-deserving Award Finalists!”
