Platelet DGD – A Common But Underdiagnosed Bleeding Disorder – RPTH
Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (RPTH) shared a post on LinkedIn about The Recent Article by Delphine Borgel, adding:
“Platelet dense granule defect: a common but underdiagnosed bleeding disorder
Dense granule defect (DGD) is one of the most frequent inherited platelet disorders, yet it remains widely underdiagnosed, largely due to the complexity of diagnostic tools and a lack of standardization.
A new study published in RPTH Journal assessed the real-world prevalence of DGD in a large French cohort 🇲🇫 of patients with unexplained bleeding symptoms.
Key findings from 119 patients across 8 expert centers:
- DGD prevalence ranged from 7.5% to 37.4%, depending on the diagnostic criteria applied
- 66 patients had at least 1 abnormal dense granule test at the first visit
- Repeated testing at a confirmatory visit was key: abnormalities were not always reproducible
- No significant differences in age, sex, or bleeding scores between patients with or without confirmed DGD
The wide prevalence range highlights a critical issue: without standardized criteria, DGD diagnosis is highly variable, and many patients may be missed or misclassified.”
