“Can Stem Cell-Delivered Platelets Fight Drug-Resistant Bacteria?
MRSA infections remain a serious clinical challenge in the era of multidrug resistance.
Platelets are known to have antibacterial properties — but the mechanisms are incompletely understood, and whether induced pluripotent stem cell-derived platelets (iPSC-PLTs) share this capacity had never been tested.
A new study in RPTH Journal investigated the MRSA-killing potential of iPSC-PLTs and the mechanisms involved.
Key findings:
- All 3 iPSC-PLT clones demonstrated MRSA-killing capacity in vitro
- MyD88-deficient iPSC-PLTs showed impaired killing
- MRSA α-toxin (Hla) suppressed iPSC-PLT bactericidal function
iPSC-PLTs offer a unique advantage:
They are gene-editable, making them a powerful platform for investigating platelet antimicrobial function, and potentially a novel therapeutic tool against resistant infections.”
