Ney Carter Borges: Wine, Moderation, and Cardiometabolic Health
Ney Carter Borges, Member Cardiologist of Global Physician Association at Cleveland Clinic Florida, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Wine, Moderation, and Cardiometabolic Health
Contemporary cardiovascular evidence suggests that the potential benefits of wine are highly dependent on dose, dietary context, and drinking pattern rather than alcohol itself.
Moderate, meal-associated wine intake within a Mediterranean dietary pattern has been linked to lower cardiovascular event rates in selected populations, particularly when combined with high-quality nutrition, physical activity, and avoidance of binge drinking.
Recent analyses from PREDIMED and MORGAM highlighted that modest wine consumption may correlate with reduced cardiovascular mortality, partly through polyphenol-mediated endothelial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects.
However, the Global Burden of Disease analysis reinforces that alcohol-related risk approaches zero exposure at the population level, especially in younger adults.
Current perspectives therefore support individualized counseling: abstainers should not initiate alcohol for prevention, while selected individuals without contraindications may incorporate low-dose wine cautiously within balanced cardiometabolic lifestyles.”
