Nigusu Tesema: What Is Deep Vein Thrombosis and Why Does It Matter After Surgery?

Nigusu Tesema, Physical Therapist at 1st Spine Clinics, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT):

This is a condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs. If not treated, these clots can travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism, which is a serious medical condition.

Risk factors

Post-Surgery Immobility:

After surgery, patients may be less mobile due to recovery and pain, increasing the risk of DVT. Lack of movement can lead to blood pooling in the veins of the legs, which can contribute to clot formation.

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Mechanical methods: Compression stockings or pneumatic compression devices to help blood flow.
  • Medication: Anticoagulants or blood thinners to prevent clot formation.
  • Physical Activity: Encouraging movement and leg exercises, as tolerated, to improve circulation.”
