”Congratulations to the NNHF Project of the Year 2026 Winner!
The Novo Nordisk Haemophilia & Haemoglobinopathies Foundation (NNHF) is proud to recognise our Project of the Year 2026: the second East Africa coalition project, a coordinated effort across Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.
This project brings four countries together around a shared goal: expanding access to care for people living with haemophilia and sickle cell disease (SCD) and shows what’s possible when partners work as one. The award was handed to the project team by NNHF Council Members Prof Johnny Mahlangu and Prof Saliou Diop.
Here are some of the key achievements:
- 538 new people with haemophilia diagnosed in two years, boosting diagnosis rates by an average of 25%
- 28 clinics established or strengthened, including 13 clinics offering integrated haemophilia and SCD care
- Up to a 10-hour reduction in travel time to receive care
- Partnerships are building sustainable training systems by embedding haemophilia and SCD into medical education pathways in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda
Advocacy progress includes:
- Uganda’s Ministry of Health budget commitment for essential treatments and reagents
- Kenya’s parliamentary motion supporting increased government focus and funding (including support through national scheme expansion for SCD)
- Rwanda’s development of treatment guidelines and a national patient registry

The East Africa project has now entered a third phase to strengthen SCD and haemophilia infrastructure, in-country training, improved diagnosis, and ongoing advocacy.
Congratulations to all partners and stakeholders involved in the East Africa project!”
