Divyaswathi Citla Sridhar: How Bone Health Is Impacted in Bleeding Disorders
Divyaswathi Citla Sridhar, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UAMS – University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Blood Advances, adding:
”Exploring how bone health is impacted in bleeding disorders has been a central focus of my research for several years.
This question has guided the last 6 years of my research, and I’m excited to share our publication in Blood Advances: ‘Bone Mineral Density, Bone Remodeling Biomarkers, and Hemostatic Correlates in Hemophilia and von Willebrand Disease.’
Funded by the Arkansas Children’s Research Institute – Marion B. Lyon New Scientist Development Award, this prospective study explored the intersection of bone health and bleeding disorders, an area that remains underrecognized but critically important for long-term patient outcomes.
Our key findings:
- Persons with Hemophilia and von Willebrand disease demonstrate measurable deficits in bone mineral density compared with healthy controls.
- Higher thrombin generation was associated with higher bone mineral density in both groups
This work has been a true longitudinal effort and reflects the dedication of an incredible team of collaborators, mentors, and research participants.
Grateful to everyone who made this work possible: Simon Chung, Andrew Brown, Shelley E. Crary, Sanjay Ahuja, Steven Bruzek, Vera Ignjatović, Neil Goldenberg, Jin-Ran Chen.
I hope these findings contribute to a broader recognition that bone health should be an integral part of comprehensive care for people with bleeding disorders, and help advance earlier screening and targeted interventions.”
