Nicolas Nesseler: Do We Overlook Factor XIII Deficiency in VA-ECMO Patients?
Nicolas Nesseler, Professor at University of Rennes, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Critical Care Journal, adding:
”Do we overlook Factor XIII deficiency in VA-ECMO patients?
We just published a prospective study in Critical Care – 50 patients on VA-ECMO, 413 FXIII measurements.
68percent spent most of their ECMO run with FXIII levels below 70percent. On average, 80percent of their support time in deficiency territory. And none of this is captured by routine PT or aPTT.
No clear trend over time. Huge variability between patients. No proven link with severe bleeding – but our sample size was limited.
The real question now: should we routinely monitor FXIII in these patients, and when does supplementation make sense?
Curious to hear from those managing ECMO patients daily.”
