Abdirahman K. Mohamud: A New Continental Plan for Sickle Cell Disease in Africa

Abdirahman K. Mohamud, Technical Officer for NCD and Mental Health at Africa CDC, shared a post on LinkedIn։

”We concluded a landmark milestone for SCD and other inherited blood disorders in Africa, marking a turning point away from decades of neglect, where the continent carried the highest burden without a unified, context-specific continental response.

I had the privilege to both witness this shift firsthand and technically lead the development and validation of this effort designed from Africa, for Africa.

Together with partners and 50 African Union Member States, we validated the Africa CDC Continental Plan for SCD and other inherited blood disorders.

This marks a critical shift, from fragmented, small-scale efforts to a coordinated, evidence-based, and scalable approach that reflects the realities of our health systems and communities.

What stands out most is the collective commitment. This is not just a policy document, it is a shared vision to address long-neglected conditions with the seriousness they demand.

As we move forward, the focus must remain on implementation, country ownership, and sustained investment.”
