Abdulrahman Nasiri: Managing Refractory Severe Aplastic Anemia During Pregnancy
Abdulrahman Nasiri, Assistant Professor at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Immuno, adding:
“I am thrilled to announce the publication of our team’s latest case report in the journal Immuno!
In this new paper, we tackle a rare but critical clinical challenge: navigating Severe Aplastic Anemia (SAA) during pregnancy.
Because standard treatments like hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and conventional immunosuppressive therapy are limited during gestation due to severe safety concerns, managing these patients requires careful, out-of-the-box clinical planning.
Our publication details how we successfully managed a complex SAA relapse in a pregnant patient through a highly individualized, multidisciplinary approach.
Key clinical highlights from our work:
- The Strategy: We achieved vital hematologic stabilization through the reintroduction of cyclosporine, combined with the TPO-RA eltrombopag and repeated stem cell boosts.
- The Outcome: This supportive approach ultimately facilitated the safe and successful delivery of a healthy infant.
- The Takeaway: While the routine use of eltrombopag during gestation is not recommended, our experience demonstrates that it can serve as a critical adjunct in refractory cases when backed by a careful risk-benefit assessment and vigilant monitoring.
I am incredibly grateful to my esteemed co-authors and mentors for their expertise and collaboration on this publication: Dr. Mostafa Faisal Mohammed Saleh, Dr. Ahemd Kotb Abrabou, Dr. Alfadil Haroon, and Prof. Mahmoud Aljurf.”
