Michael R. Jaff: HI-PEITHO Trial and NEWS Score Insights on Advances for Intermediate-Risk Pulmonary Embolism
Michael R. Jaff, Chief Medical Officer and Vice President, Peripheral Interventions at Boston Scientific, shared on LinkedIn:
”The continued evolution of evidence in pulmonary embolism care (PE) is helping reshape how we assess, monitor and intervene for patients with acute intermediate-risk PE.
The landmark HI-PEITHO trial, with primary endpoint findings recently presented at ACC26, used clinically meaningful endpoints to demonstrate that the EKOS Endovascular System combined with anticoagulation was superior to anticoagulation alone in the treatment of acute intermediate-risk PE, and helped to prevent patient decompensation.
Importantly, HI-PEITHO also marked the first PE randomized controlled trial to incorporate the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) into the study protocol to assess patient severity both acutely and longitudinally, with the goal of removing investigator bias.
Today, a secondary analysis of data from the HI-PEITHO trial was presented at EuroPCR2026 that provides additional insight into patient progression throughout the trial and further validates the role of NEWS in clinical assessment and ongoing monitoring.
This is especially significant as NEWS was recently recognized within the 2026 ACC/AHA Pulmonary Embolism Guidelines as an important tool to help identify deterioration and guide timely intervention.
The latest data demonstrated that patients treated with the EKOS device alongside anticoagulation experienced improved NEWS scores following randomization compared with anticoagulation alone.
This growing body of evidence reinforces the importance of combining innovative therapies with structured clinical assessment tools to advance PE care, improve patient monitoring and support earlier intervention when patients need it most.”
