Rehab Hussein: Blood Bank Training and the Clinical Responsibility of Preserving Human Life
Rehab Hussein, Medical laboratory Intern at Atbara Teaching Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The fourth, fifth, and sixth weeks of my practical training at the Police Hospital were among the most enjoyable and meaningful periods for me, as I trained in the Blood Bank Department.
I learned a great deal alongside supportive and cooperative colleagues, and one of the phrases we constantly reminded each other of was:
‘Whoever saves one life, it is as if they have saved all of humanity.’
During this period, I became familiar with the different sections of the Blood Bank laboratory and the work performed in each area, starting from Preparation and Serology to Donation. I also learned the criteria to select donors and the essential requirements of the Donation Area.
In addition, I learned about the different anticoagulants used in the Blood Bank and their shelf life in preserving RBCs inside blood bags. I was also introduced to the procedures performed on blood bags to obtain different blood products such as:
Fresh Blood, Whole Blood, Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), Concentrated Platelets, Packed Cells, Platelet Poor Plasma (PPP), and Treated Blood, including the appropriate storage temperature and expiration period for each product.
Moreover, I learned the different types of Cross Matching, including:
Major Cross Match in both Urgent and Ordinary cases, as well as Minor Cross Match.
I also learned about the Du Method, its importance, procedure, and indications, in addition to becoming familiar with the Coombs Test, Antibody Titration Testing, and Transfusion Reactions.
All of this deepened my passion for my specialty and strengthened its connection to a noble purpose: preserving human life.
I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the Laboratory Department administration, especially Dr. Sheikh Eldin, for his dedicated and detailed explanations, which greatly contributed to expanding our scientific and practical knowledge.”
