Lynne Baird: Why Expanding Bleed Control Kits Across Public Transport Matters
Lynne Baird, Assistant at The Daniel Baird Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Disappointed to see TfL reject the wider rollout of bleed control kits across the network based on outdated NHS advice.
I know from personal experience just how important these kits are.
The reason we have bleed control kits in the UK today is because of what happened to my son, Daniel Baird.
When Daniel was fatally stabbed, there was no ambulance, no police and no help whatsoever in those crucial moments.
Those experiences are why we fought so hard to introduce publicly accessible bleed control kits through The Daniel Baird Foundation and the Control The Bleed campaign – to give others a chance Daniel never had.
These kits are not theoretical.
They are practical, proven, life-saving resources that have already saved many lives across the country.
The West Midlands pioneered this initiative years ago and many regions followed because the evidence speaks for itself.
Hundreds of bleed control kits are already installed across London, with installations beginning back in 2019.
The City of London Police recognised their importance early on, installing kits throughout the City and training hundreds of people to respond in an emergency.
We already understand the value of defibrillators in public spaces because immediate intervention saves lives.
Severe bleeding is no different.
In those critical first minutes before emergency services arrive, these kits can mean the difference between life and death.
Rejecting a valuable life-saving resource that is already working successfully elsewhere simply does not make sense.
This should never be about bureaucracy or outdated guidance.
It should be about saving lives.”
