Soumen Bhattacharya: UC-II and Immune Modulation in Osteoarthritis
Soumen Bhattacharya, Lecturer at the Faculty of Physiology, RBC College for Women, shared a post on LinkedIn about an article by Ashim Gupta and Nicola Maffulli, published in Annals of Medicine, adding:
“Undenatured Type II Collagen (UC-II): A Novel Immunomodulatory Strategy in Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) is no longer viewed solely as a ‘wear-and-tear’ disease. Chronic low-grade inflammation plays a critical role in cartilage degradation, pain, stiffness, and progressive loss of joint function.
Recent evidence highlights an interesting therapeutic concept: Undenatured Type II Collagen (UC-II) works through oral immune tolerance, targeting inflammation rather than merely masking symptoms.
How does it work?
- UC-II reaches the Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT)
- Peyer’s patches recognize native Type II collagen epitopes
- Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are activated
- Tregs migrate to joints and release anti-inflammatory cytokines: Upregulates – IL-10, IL-4, TGF-β
Simultaneously suppress pro-inflammatory mediators: Suppresses – TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6
Clinical Implications
Published studies have demonstrated:
- Reduced pain scores (VAS)
- Improved WOMAC scores
- Enhanced range of motion
- Better walking performance and mobility
- Improved quality of life
- Favorable safety profile
Why is this important?
Unlike conventional analgesics and NSAIDs that primarily address symptoms, UC-II may help modulate the immune response contributing to joint inflammation and cartilage degeneration.
As our understanding of osteoarthritis evolves, immune-targeted nutraceutical interventions may become valuable components of comprehensive OA management strategies.”
