Tareq Abadl: Key Differences Between Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura and Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura
Tareq Abadl, Medical Lab Specialist, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura vs Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura.
Same low platelets. Different danger.
Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP)
- Autoimmune platelet destruction
- Bleeding disorder
- PT/APTT usually normal
- Large platelets on smear
Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP)
- Platelet-rich microthrombi
- Clotting and hemolysis disorder
- Schistocytes on smear
- Severe ADAMTS13 deficiency
Quick Smear Clue
- ITP – Large platelets
- TTP – Schistocytes
One causes bleeding.
One causes clotting and organ damage.”
