José Antonio García Erce: Collaborative PBM Implementation in Transfusion Centers and Services
José Antonio García Erce, Vocal-elect of the Board of the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy, shared a post on LinkedIn about recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Medicina Clinica, adding:
“Honored and Proud of Our New Work Published in Clinical Medicine:
Collaboration Between Transfusion Centers and Services in the Implementation of Patient Blood Management Programs
Thank you for your unwavering faith, support, and trust to Dr. Saioa Zalba, Dr. Gabriel Cerdán Rodríguez, and Dr. Javier Ripolles, and especially to the teams at the University Hospital of Navarra, Dr. Arteche, and the García Orcoyen Hospital in Estella, Dr. Platja.
Conclusions
The progressive, though not yet complete, implementation of a regional patient blood management program, even in a “neutral” scenario, has been associated with a substantial reduction in the consumption of blood components and a significant increase in plasma destined for industrial fractionation, with greater production of plasma-derived blood products.
This dual effect would translate into an estimated direct cost savings of over €5.5 million and indirect savings of approximately €6.4 million, reinforcing the sustainability and safety of the regional healthcare system.
The collaborative model would support the potential central role of the blood transfusion center, in coordination with hospital transfusion services, as a driver of blood transfusion services (BTS), in addition to being, after patients, one of the main beneficiaries, and could serve as a reference for other autonomous communities.
Based on evidence, ethics, and economics, the universal and effective implementation of BTS programs is urgently needed, as they go beyond mere cost savings.
