Fouad Mikhail: Mechanical Thrombectomy and Anticoagulation in Intermediate-Risk Pulmonary Embolism

Fouad Mikhail, Sub-speciality Coordinator at NEGIDA Corporation, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, adding:

“Honored to share that our original research has been accepted for publication in Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions (CCI) Impact Factor: 2.1 (SJR: 0.964 -Q1 in Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine).

In this work, we took a granular, risk-stratified approach to a clinically urgent question:

  • In intermediate-risk PE, does mechanical thrombectomy offer a survival advantage over anticoagulation alone?

While MT was associated with lower 1-year mortality across both subgroups, the net clinical benefit differs sharply by risk profile—which may help refine patient selection for this rapidly adopted procedure.

  • Large, real‑world cohort from a federated network of 165+ healthcare organizations
  • Risk‑stratified design (low‑intermediate vs. high‑intermediate PE)

The paper is now published.

Special thanks to my dearest mentor that I have always learnt from .. Dr. Ahmed Abdelmaksoud and for my all time teammates Dr. Ali Dway and Dr. Abdulrahman El helbawy as well as our senior authors and all co‑authors for their invaluable contributions.”
