José María Bastida Bermejo: IPDs Help to Better Understand Platelet Biogenesis and Function

José María Bastida Bermejo, Hematologist at the Salamanca University Healthcare Complex, Co-Principal Investigator at IBSAL, Associate Professor of Physiology at the University of Salamanca, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article by Ana C. Glembotsky et al, published in Blood Reviews, adding:

”Excited to share our latest work from the GEAPC!

Platelets play a crucial role not only in hemostasis, but also in thrombosis, inflammation, immunity, and tissue repair.

In this work, we review inherited platelet disorders (IPDs), a heterogeneous group of rare diseases caused by germline variants affecting megakaryocyte development, platelet production, structure, or function.

Clinically, these conditions range from bleeding phenotypes to syndromic features and even predisposition to hematologic malignancies.

Over recent years, advances in platelet biology and molecular genetics have driven significant progress in:

  • Diagnosis
  • Personalized management
  • Genetic counseling

At the same time, IPDs are proving to be powerful human models to better understand platelet biogenesis and function in both health and disease.

I’m very pleased with this work and proud to be part of the GEAPC team contributing to this field.”
