Zain Khalpey: Recognizing High-Risk Coronary Hematoma Characteristics During PCI
Zain Khalpey, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Takunori Tsukui et al., published in JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions, adding:
“This JACC study highlights several imaging features associated with worsening hematomas, including extramedial location, larger hematoma size, greater stent edge hinge motion, and hematomas extending into a normal artery segment without a side branch.
Notably, coronary hematoma was the second leading ischemic cause of emergent return to the catheterization laboratory, behind stent thrombosis, and half of these cases were associated with myocardial infarction.
As intravascular imaging becomes increasingly integrated into PCI, recognizing high risk hematoma characteristics may help guide management and improve outcomes.”
