Albert Farrugia: The Past, Present and Future of Blood Plasma Fractionation

Albert Farrugia Clinical Professor, UWA Medical School, Surgery, shared an inspiring post on LinkedIn:

“It is one of the honours of my life to be associated with the two great names and dear friends with whom this work was produced-John Curling and Leni von Bonsdorff .

I was keen on us developing this project after a long period of hearing the founders of this industry being denigrated by a number of ambitious adventurers who frequently refer to Cohn fractionation as “bucket chemistry ” with no innovative effort since its inception, in order to tout alternatives which have foundered before seeing the light of day.

In this paper, the industry’s history is reviewed, alternative technologies are assessed, and areas such as disruptive therapies and pathogen reduction are discussed.

The paper is available on Open Access and we welcome comments.

And, as I always say when I lecture on plasma fractionation:
‘First there was Cohn, and then there was Curling’.”
