Michael Stark: Greater Improvements in Cerebral Oxygenation With Restrictive Transfusion Thresholds
Michael Stark, Professor of Neonatal Medicine and Deputy Director of Clinical Research at the Robinson Research Institute, Director of Neonatal Medicine at the University of Adelaide and Head of Neonatal Services at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital Adelaide, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Neonatology, adding:
“Assessing the effect on tissue oxygenation in response to RBC transfusion by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) has been proposed as a step towards individualised transfusion decision making in preterm infants. Yet clinical practice is inconsistent with both restrictive versus liberal transfusion thresholds still routinely used.
Our latest publication, and the 1st results chapter from Danielle Bailey‘s (The Robinson Research Institutes Neonatal Research Group) investigating the intersection of transfusion exposure and oxygen physiology, suggests greater improvements to cerebral oxygenation with a restrictive threshold and enhanced physiological benefit.”
