This month’s editorial explores haematology’s role in epidemic preparedness. The Bundibugyo virus outbreak is a reminder that no medical specialty can afford to look away.

Our July cover by Vito Ansaldi is inspired by a Viewpoint from Ariela Marshall (University of Minnesota) and colleagues advocating for institutional recognition of the value of classical haematology consultation and support for classical haematologists pursuing inpatient-focused careers.

Epcoritamab monotherapy for DLBCL

This phase 2 trial assessed fixed-duration epcoritamab monotherapy versus epcoritamab with lenalidomide in older adults with newly diagnosed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

In stage 1, complete response rates were 63·6% (95% CI 47·8–77·6) and 45·5% (30·4–61·2), respectively; across both stages, 57·6% (44·8–69·7; 38 of 66 patients) achieved complete response with monotherapy. Umberto Vitolo (Candiolo Cancer Institute IRCCS) and colleagues.

Inotuzumab ozogamicin for paediatric B-cell ALL

This phase 1–2 trial evaluated inotuzumab ozogamicin in children with CD22-positive very high-risk first B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia relapse.

Among the first 31 enrolled patients, 22 responded (overall response rate 71%, 80% CI 58–82); all had at least one grade 3–4 haematological laboratory abnormality. Erica Brivio (Prinses Máxima Centrum voor kinderoncologie) and colleagues.

Patient-reported AEs after CAR T-cell therapy in B-cell lymphomas

This observational study compared short-term patient-reported symptomatic AEs in patients with aggressive B-cell lymphomas treated with CAR T-cell therapy.

Prevalence exceeded 50% across 12 of 19 symptoms examined, with physicians frequently under-reporting. Fabio Efficace (Fondazione GIMEMA – Franco Mandelli Onlus) and colleagues.

Apixaban for VTE in paediatric patients

This randomised, descriptive study showed that recurrent venous thromboembolism occurred in four (2·6% [95% CI 0·8–6·7]) of 155 patients assigned to apixaban and two (2·7% [0·2–9·9]) of 74 assigned to standard of care, with no major bleeding events.
