Fiona Bardon: Shaping Better Long-Term Stroke Care Through the CLASP Pathway

Fiona Bardon, Health Service Executive, PPI Member, Patient Champion and Volunteer at Irish Heart Foundation, shared on LinkedIn:

”Thank you to Dilly, Stephen and Luke for inviting members of the CLASP team into the Department of Health – Ireland yesterday morning.

It was wonderful to share the findings of our Co-Designing Life After Stroke Pathway (CLASP) research, conducted over the past 3 years.

Takeaways from our discussion included:

  • Resource Gap: Medical advancements mean higher survival rates, but post-discharge resources are increasingly difficult to access.
  • Long-Haul Planning: Stroke recovery isn’t linear. Survivors need personalised, long-term healthcare plans.
  • Patient-Driven Timing: Access to interventions must align with when patients feel ready, not just when the healthcare system dictates.
  • Seamless Pathways: Re-engaging with medical services when new challenges surface must be effortless.

Frances Horgan, Mary O’Neill, Olive Lennon and I emphasised that healthcare continuity shouldn’t be a maze – it must be a seamless safety net.

Survivors need real support as we navigate our ‘new life’ post-stroke.”
