Francesca Palandri: New Insights Into Anemia Management in Myelofibrosis

Francesca Palandri, Hematologist at IRCCS Sant’Orsola Polyclinic – Bologna University Hospital, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in European Journal of Haematology, adding:

”New in the European Journal of Haematology: hemoglobin ≥10 g/dL as a survival-linked treatment target in myelofibrosis.

Francesca Palandri, Casey O’Connell, Pankit Vachhani, Donal McLornan, Steffen Koschmieder, Hernandez Boluda Juan Carlos, Kazuya Shimoda, William Shiyuan Zhang, Catherine Ellis, Jasmine Sahni, and Vikas Gupta analyzed post hoc data from the SIMPLIFY-1 and MOMENTUM phase 3 trials in myelofibrosis patients with anemia.

The findings:

  • 63% of JAK inhibitor-naive patients reached Hb ≥10 g/dL by week 24, versus 36% of JAK inhibitor-experienced patients.
  • Patients with moderate anemia at baseline hit that threshold faster and more often than patients with severe anemia.
  • Reaching Hb ≥10 g/dL tracked with longer survival across both trials.

Take action:

  1. Treat anemia early — don’t wait for it to become severe.
  2. Set Hb ≥10 g/dL as a concrete treatment target, not just a lab value to monitor.
  3. Track transfusion independence alongside Hb — both matter for outcomes.
