Priyam Bordoloi: 5 Leg Changes You Should Never Ignore
Priyam Bordoloi, Internal Medicine Resident, shared a post on X:
“Your legs can warn you before a clot reaches your lungs, heart failure worsens, poor circulation threatens a limb, or nerve damage hides an injury.
Most people blame age, shoes or tiredness.
Here are 5 changes I would never ignore:
1.One leg suddenly becomes bigger
New swelling in one calf, especially with warmth, discoloration or unexplained tenderness, may be a clot in a deep vein.
Get assessed promptly. If breathlessness or chest pain follows, seek emergency care. The clot may have reached the lungs.
2.Both socks start leaving deep rings
New swelling in both ankles can mean fluid retention. When it comes with breathlessness, rapid weight gain or needing extra pillows, I assess the heart.
Heart failure is one possibility, not the only cause of swollen legs.
3.Your calf hurts at the same point in every walk
Patients tell me, ‘Dr. Priyam, it starts after two blocks and settles when I stop.’
That repeatable cramp is called claudication. It can mean a narrowed leg artery cannot supply enough blood during exercise.
4.One foot becomes colder or a wound will not heal
A foot colder than the other, pale or blue skin or a toe wound that lingers can signal severely reduced circulation.
Sudden pain, pallor, coldness, numbness or weakness is an emergency. A limb may be losing its blood supply.
5.Burning feet keep you awake
Burning, tingling or numbness in both feet often worse at night, suggests peripheral neuropathy.
I am an Internal Medicine resident so diabetes is the first question I think about. B12 deficiency, alcohol and some medicines can also damage nerves.”
