Alan Nurden: Novel Platelet Inhibitors Expanding the Scope of Antithrombotic Therapy
Alan Nurden, Emeritus Research Director at CNRS, Co-Founder of the French National Reference Centre for Inherited Platelet Disorders (CRPP), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Thomas Kartika et al., published in Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis, adding:
”This manuscript from Barry S Coller and his coworkers widens the perspective for ‘safe’ inhibitors of platelets in arterial thrombosis.
Known for their pioneering and highly successful studies on inhibitors of the alphaIIbbeta3 integrin starting with abciximab, they have now examined in detail the mechanisms whereby a series of Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors prevent platelet aggregation mediated through glycoprotein VI (GPVI), PEAR1 and Fcgamma-receptors.
Their work targeting specific signaling pathways opens the perspective for a novel approach to the treatment of virus or drug-induced thrombosis induced by immune complexes and perhaps, in the very rare cases of thrombotic-related complications seen in patients with inherited platelet disorders including Glanzmann thrombasthenia.
Highly recommended.”
