Siddhartha Ganguly: Why 10 Units of Cryoprecipitate in Hypofibrinogenemia Matters
Siddhartha Ganguly, Hematologic Malignancy and Cellular Therapeutics at Houston Methodist Hospital, shared a post on X:
”Why do we order 10 units of cryoprecipitate in hypofibrinogenemia?
Cryoprecipitate contains Factor VIII, VWF, Factor XIII(often a board question), Fibronectin, and Fibrinogen 150-250 mg. 10 units give 1.5-2.5 g of Fibrinogen.
Usually in an adult, 1 unit gives a bump of 6-10 mg/dl, hence 10 unit should raise Fibrinogen level by 60-100 mg/dl provided there is no ongoing consumption.
In ongoing consumption recheck Fibrinogen and re transfuse. 10 units of Cryo is hence considered a historical adult dose.”
