Innocent Mupunga: Sri Lanka Strengthens Blood Screening Quality Through International Collaboration

“Behind every safe blood transfusion are robust laboratory quality systems and dedicated teams of skilled professionals.
Over the past two weeks, Bernadette Portelli and I have had the privilege of working with the National Blood Transfusion Service – Sri Lanka, delivering EQAS training, conducting system reviews, and providing hands-on mentoring.
It has been rewarding to support their ongoing efforts to strengthen quality systems and enhance confidence in laboratory testing that underpins safe and reliable blood transfusion services.”

“Behind every safe blood transfusion are robust laboratory quality systems and skilled professionals.
WHO is supporting Sri Lanka’s National Blood Transfusion Service – Sri Lanka (NBTS) through a two-week specialized training program led by experts from the National Serology Reference Laboratory (NRL), Australia, a WHO Collaborating Centre with global expertise in laboratory quality systems and external quality assessment.
The program aims to strengthen NBTS capacity in External Quality Assessment Schemes (EQAS) for blood screening, improving testing accuracy and the safety and reliability of blood transfusion services
Through technical training, system reviews and hands-on mentoring, this multi-year collaboration is advancing Sri Lanka’s progress towards ISO accreditation in EQAS and its goal of becoming a regional EQAS center in South-East Asia.
WHO remains committed to strengthening laboratory quality systems, blood safety and resilient health services in Sri Lanka through international collaboration and knowledge sharing.”
