Hugo Ribeiro: Which NSAIDs Are Safest for Older Adults?
Hugo Ribeiro, Invited Specialist of Palliative Medicine at European Commission, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I am delighted to announce that our article ‘Appropriate Prescription of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in Geriatric Patients—A Systematic Review’, published in BioChem, was selected as an Editor’s Choice article.
This recognition highlights our work as one of the most significant and high-quality articles published in this journal.
This systematic review of 39 studies (patients more than 65 years) compares the safety of ibuprofen, naproxen, acemetacin, diclofenac, celecoxib, and etoricoxib.
Celecoxib has a more favorable GI, renal and CV safety profile versus the other studied NSAIDs. Acemetacin shows a promising greater safety profile but remains unproven and requires dedicated research.
Diclofenac and etoricoxib are linked to higher cardiovascular risk. Evidence is limited by heterogeneity and scarce geriatric-specific data overall.
