Matthew Siedhoff: Understanding the Cause Behind Gynecological Symptoms
Matthew Siedhoff, Obstetrician-Gynecologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“One of the greatest challenges in gynecology is that many conditions present with the same symptoms. Heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, bloating, painful periods, or bladder discomfort can have multiple causes, which is why reaching the correct diagnosis isn’t always straightforward.
Too often, women spend years searching for answers because symptoms are treated individually instead of being viewed as part of a larger clinical picture.
Endometriosis, adenomyosis, uterine fibroids, and other pelvic disorders frequently overlap in both symptoms and presentation. A careful evaluation requires listening to a patient’s history, recognizing patterns, performing a thorough examination, and using appropriate imaging or additional testing when needed.
That’s how we move beyond simply treating symptoms to identifying the underlying cause.
As physicians, our responsibility isn’t just to manage discomfort, it’s to understand why it’s happening. An accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective, personalized treatment, whether that involves medication, lifestyle changes, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery.
Women deserve to have their symptoms taken seriously and to understand all of their treatment options. When we take the time to listen and look at the complete picture, we give patients the best opportunity to improve their health and quality of life.”
