Shamee Shastry: Using AI to Transform Blood Inventory Management
Shamee Shastry, Professor and Head of the Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Discover Applied Sciences, adding:
“Blood Inventory Management in a 2000 plus bed tertiary care referral hospital is not an easy task.
Even with a blood centre software, every day the Transfusion Medicine team has to review multiple variables and take critical decisions:
How much stock is required?
- Which blood groups need priority attention?
- What is the expected demand?
- What is the shelf life and risk of expiry?
- How will season, holidays, academic calendar and donor availability influence collection?
At the end of the day, blood inventory management is experience-driven decision-making supported by mathematics, clinical understanding and continuous monitoring.
But in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, can this complex decision-making process be simplified?
A recent collaborative publication between Manipal Institute of Technology and the Transfusion Medicine KMC Manipal team explored this possibility by developing a data-driven forecasting framework for intelligent blood inventory planning, using three years of real-world blood donation data from a tertiary care centre in India.
Congratulations to Ms Shruthi for this excellent work, and thanks to Professor Srikanth Srinivas Prabhu for providing this valuable opportunity.”
