Rob Maloney: The Lifelong Relationships at the Heart of Hemophilia Care
Rob Maloney, Chief Executive Officer at Hemophilia of Georgia, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“One of the things that surprised me most when I came to Hemophilia of Georgia was how long our relationships last.
In most areas of healthcare, you meet people during a season of life.
A surgery.
A hospitalization.
A diagnosis.
Then life moves on.
Our work is different.
We often meet families shortly after a diagnosis.
Then we watch children become teenagers.
Teenagers become adults.
Adults become parents themselves.
Years go by.
Sometimes decades.
Along the way, we’re there for the milestones you would expect—clinic visits, new treatments, education, insurance questions.
But we’re also there for the milestones that have nothing to do with medicine.
The first time a child goes to camp.
Graduating from high school.
Heading off to college.
Getting married.
Becoming a parent.
That’s what makes rare disease care so unique.
We’re not simply walking with people through a medical event.
We’re walking with them through life.
It has changed the way I think about healthcare.
The best care isn’t always measured by what happens inside an exam room.
Sometimes it’s measured by whether a family knows exactly who to call when life becomes uncertain.
Sometimes it’s measured by the trust that’s been built over twenty years.
That’s what I’m most proud of at Hemophilia of Georgia.
Not just the programs we’ve created.
The relationships we’ve been privileged to keep.
In healthcare, we often talk about continuity of care.
I’ve come to believe what families are really looking for is continuity of people.
Someone who knows their story.
Someone who picks up the phone.
Someone who will still be there years from now.
That’s the kind of organization we’re trying to be.”
