Nida Khurshid Ahmed: Raising Awareness of Peripartum Acquired Haemophilia A for Early Diagnosis
Nida Khurshid Ahmed, Prophylaxis Therapy In-Charge at Hemophilia Welfare Society Karachi, shared Heghine Khachatryan‘s post on LinkedIn:
“A highly important publication highlighting a rare and complex bleeding disorder: peripartum acquired haemophilia A.
This condition can be challenging to recognize and manage, particularly because it occurs in women around pregnancy and the postpartum period who may have no previous personal or family history of bleeding disorders.
Raising awareness among obstetricians, hematologists, and healthcare professionals is essential for early diagnosis, appropriate management, and ultimately improving maternal outcomes.
A valuable contribution to the growing understanding of acquired haemophilia A.”
Heghine Khachatryan, Editor-in-Chief of Hemostasis Today, Head of Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center at Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center, shared Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis‘s post on LinkedIn:
“A highly relevant and timely publication addressing one of the most complex and underrecognized challenges in haemostasis: prepartum acquired haemophilia A.
Although rare, this potentially life-threatening condition may progress rapidly and poses serious risks to both mother and child.
Its clinical relevance lies in the need for increased awareness, early recognition of unexpected bleeding and isolated APTT prolongation, prompt confirmation of factor VIII deficiency and inhibitor presence, and immediate initiation of individualized haemostatic and immunosuppressive treatment.
Successful management requires close multidisciplinary collaboration among haematologists, obstetricians, anaesthesiologists, neonatologists, and laboratory specialists. Sharing such clinical experience is essential for improving diagnostic vigilance, reducing delays in treatment, and achieving safer maternal and neonatal outcomes.
At Hemostasis Today, we consider raising awareness of rare bleeding disorders in women and pregnancy an important priority and strongly support the exchange of evidence-based clinical experience.”
Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH) shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Audrey Hochart et al., adding:
“Prepartum acquired hemophilia A: managing a double challenge for mother and child
Acquired hemophilia A during pregnancy is very rare and threatens both mother and fetus, since factor VIII inhibitors can cross the placenta. Across four antenatally diagnosed cases, all mothers received corticosteroids with individualized peripartum bypassing agents.
Inhibitor transfer caused transient low FVIII in three neonates with only one mild bleed, and all infants remitted within weeks. Some mothers needed rituximab.”
