Leonardo Roever: Diagnosis and Management of Natural Anticoagulant Deficiencies
Leonardo Roever, CEO of Brazilian Evidence-Based Health Network, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Katarzyna Mayger et al, published in Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, adding:
“Physiological anticoagulant deficiencies: pathogenesis, diagnosis, and clinical implications
Physiological anticoagulants are essential regulators of coagulation; their deficiency shifts hemostasis toward a pro-thrombotic state, increasing the risk of venous thromboembolism.
The main physiological anticoagulants—antithrombin (AT), protein C (PC), and protein S (PS)—operate via distinct mechanisms: AT directly inhibits active proteases, primarily thrombin and factor Xa, while PC inactivates activated factors V and VIII, with PS acting as a cofactor.
Deficiencies can be hereditary (resulting from genetic mutations) or acquired (resulting from reduced synthesis or increased consumption).”
