Cristina Chang: The Importance of The New ET Treatments
Cristina Chang, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Global at Harvest Integrated Research Organization (HiRO), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“What is essential thrombocythemia – and why are new treatments important?
Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a rare, chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm in which the bone marrow produces too many platelets.
Despite the high platelet count, patients face the seemingly contradictory risks of both dangerous blood clots and abnormal bleeding.
ET is commonly driven by mutations in JAK2, CALR, or MPL.
Patients may experience fatigue, headaches, dizziness, visual disturbances, night sweats, an enlarged spleen, or painful redness and burning in the hands and feet.
More serious complications include stroke, heart attack, deep-vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and gastrointestinal bleeding.
Treatment is guided by age, mutation status, cardiovascular risk factors, and previous thrombosis.
It may include observation, low-dose aspirin, and cytoreductive therapy to control blood counts and reduce complications.
Because ET is a lifelong disease with a small risk of progression to myelofibrosis or acute myeloid leukemia, patients require long-term monitoring – and treatments that can address not only platelet counts but also the underlying disease biology.”
