Hannah Isles: Interesting Link between Aging, Serotonin, Platelets and COVID-19 Severity

Hannah Isles, Scientific Writer and Editor of Hannah Isles Editorial, shared a post on LInkedIn about a recent article by Davide Marotta, published in Science Immunology, published in Science Immunology, adding:

“Interesting link between aging, serotonin, platelets and COVID-19 severity:

A new study in Science Immunology from Matteo Iannacone, Marco De Giovanni, Davide Marotta and colleagues identifies platelet-derived serotonin as a driver of age-related lung pathology following SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Platelets from older mice released more serotonin when activated, and this was associated with platelet aggregation and fibrin deposition in the lung, contributing to respiratory dysfunction.

Blocking serotonin signaling reduced disease severity, raising the possibility of a therapeutic strategy for age-associated severe COVID-19.”
