Aravind Palraj: Anemia of Chronic Inflammation is Not Just “Iron Deficiency”
Aravind Palraj, Senior Resident in Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at Madras Medical College, shared a post on X:
“Anemia of chronic inflammation is not just ‘iron deficiency.’
Mechanism:
Chronic inflammation leads to increased IL-6, which increases hepcidin, causing ferroportin degradation, iron sequestration in macrophages and reduced intestinal iron absorption, ultimately reducing iron availability for erythropoiesis and causing anemia.
Usually normocytic or normochromic early; may become microcytic later.”
