Mary Kama: Climate-Informed Early Warning Systems for Sickle Cell Anaemia
Mary Kama, Lecturer at Veritas University Abuja, Research assistant of HIPIC Research group at University of Nigeria Nsukka, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making, adding:
“Congratulations to all of us who made it in this paper, Web of Science (SCIE) or Scopus got published.
Sickle cel anemia (SCA) has become a recurring issue in our contemporary society. It is a severe genetic blood disorder characterized by recurrent vaso-occlusive crises and increased mortality, with the greatest burden occurring in low- and middle-income countries.
We delved into this study to contribute in solving the challenges through Inter-Departmental and institutional collaboration. Kudo to Software Engineering and Computer Science Department, Veritas University Abuja, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki for the team work.
Results The findings indicate that most existing models rely predominantly on clinical and demographic data, with limited integration of climate information and inadequate representation of high-burden regions, especially Sub-Saharan Africa.
Studies incorporating environmental variables reported improved predictive performance and highlighted the potential of climate-informed early warning systems for SCA management.”
