Patience Nkabe Odey: What Drives Rhesus D Screening Uptake Among Pregnant Women?

Patience Nkabe Odey, Microbiologist, Public Health Professional at National Reference Laboratory, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in JKIMSU, adding:

“New publication alert!

I am delighted to share our newly published research in JKIMSU, Vol. 15, No. 2 (April-June 2026).

Title: Socio-demographic characteristics and their influence on utilization of rhesus D blood group screening services among pregnant women attending antenatal care at Kuchingoro PHC, FCT, Abuja.

Odey PN, Obeagu EI. et al.

What we found in 400 pregnant women at Kuchingoro PHC, Abuja:

  1. Only 18.8% had done Rhesus D screening – 81.2% had NOT.
  2. The biggest barriers were lack of awareness (41.8%) and cost (13%).
  3. Socio-demographic factors like age, education and occupation did not significantly influence uptake.

Why it matters:

Failure to screen Rhesus-negative mothers puts newborns at risk of haemolytic disease, severe jaundice, anemia, and even stillbirth. This is preventable.

Our call: We need routine health education during ANC, provider-initiated screening, and subsidized or free testing to close this gap in primary healthcare.

Full paper: JKIMSU Pages 126-136.

Grateful to my co-author, participants, and Kuchingoro PHC.”
