Samuel Misiani Mbunya: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Through Collaboration at the 21st ASCAT Conference

Samuel Misiani Mbunya, Principal Consultant at Dr Mbunya Health and Leadership Consultancy, Advocacy Relations Consultant – Hemophilia and Sickle Cell Disease Programs – Kenya at Innovative Hematology, Inc., shared a post on LinkedIn:

“21st ASCAT Conference: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Through Collaboration

‘Impacting Care. Together.’ — A powerful message that resonates deeply with our collective mission to improve the lives of people living with sickle cell disease and other inherited blood disorders.

It was a pleasure connecting with colleagues Natasha Honan and Llyord Mwaniki and partners from the Novo Nordisk Haemophilia and Haemoglobinopathies Foundation during the 21st Annual ASCAT Conference in London.

As we continue to advance sickle cell disease advocacy across Africa, conferences such as ASCAT provide an important platform to exchange knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and explore innovative approaches to improving diagnosis, treatment, and equitable access to comprehensive care.

For me, three priorities remain central to our advocacy efforts:

  • Strengthening African healthcare systems through capacity building, research, and sustainable partnerships.
  • Amplifying patient voices to ensure that individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease remain at the centre of healthcare decisions.
  • Bridging the gap between research, policy, and practice so that scientific advances translate into meaningful improvements in patient outcomes.

The work of NNHF in supporting haemophilia and haemoglobinopathy programmes in underserved communities reinforces the importance of collaboration, local ownership, and sustainable solutions.

The future of sickle cell care in Africa will not be transformed by individual efforts alone, but through partnerships that turn advocacy into action and action into measurable impact.

Together, we can move beyond awareness towards access, equity, and better quality of life for every sickle cell warrior.”
