Carmine Siniscalchi: Could LDL Cholesterol Help Us Better Predict Bleeding Risk in Patients with VTE?

Carmine Siniscalchi, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine under the Italian National Scientific Qualification (ASN), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in JAMA Network, adding:

“Could LDL cholesterol help us better predict bleeding risk in patients with venous thromboembolism?

I am pleased to share our study published in JAMA Network Open, based on data from the RIETE Registry.

Among 19,237 patients with VTE receiving anticoagulant therapy, LDL-C levels <70 mg/dL were associated with a 40% higher adjusted risk of bleeding during the first 90 days of anticoagulation.

Interestingly, this association was observed early during anticoagulant therapy and was independent of statin use.

These findings raise an important clinical question: could LDL-C represent an additional factor for bleeding risk stratification in patients with VTE?

Further research is needed, but our results suggest a potentially new perspective on the relationship between lipid levels, hemostasis, and anticoagulant therapy.”
