Shiny K. Kajal: Japan Advances Artificial Blood via Haemoglobin Vesicles Trials
Shiny K. Kajal, Senior Resident at Adesh University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Post 53
Japan’s ‘Artificial Blood’ — but is it ready yet?
Japan is currently investigating Haemoglobin Vesicles (HbV) — an artificial oxygen carrier designed to mimic the oxygen-delivery function of RBCs.
🇯🇵 Where are we now?
Human studies have already been conducted, including Phase I and the ongoing clinical development through Phase Ib trials in healthy volunteers, primarily evaluating safety and pharmacokinetics.
The exciting part?
- ABO/Rh-independent oxygen carrier
- Potential room-temperature storage
- Possible role in emergencies when compatible RBCs are unavailable
But importantly — this is still investigational.
It is not yet a replacement for conventional RBC transfusion.
And for Transfusion Medicine, there’s another interesting challenge: HbV can interfere with ABO/Rh typing and compatibility testing.
Artificial blood may be getting closer — but we’re still in the clinical-trial phase.”
