Mokhtar Tazik: Improving Access to Plasma Derived Medicines Through Awareness, Interest and Accessibility
Mokhtar Tazik, Plasma Bussiness Manager and Local Biotest QA at DAC, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Awareness plus Interest plus Accessibility
A recent study on 2000 population in Spain highlights important points about an often overlooked factors in plasma supply chain:
- 84 percent of people know what plasma is, but only 58 percent know that plasma is used to manufacture essential medicines.
- Only around half are familiar with plasmapheresis, the specific method used to collect plasma.
- At the same time, 75 percent said they would be willing to donate plasma if they had more information about plasma donation and a plasma donation center was available near them.
This raises an important question:
Is the plasma supply gap only a matter of willingness to donate OR do awareness and accessibility also play a significant role?
The importance of this question becomes even clearer when we look at demand.
In Spain, IVIG consumption increased by 21 percent over the past two years and by 114 percent over the past decade.
Yet in 2025, Spain’s self sufficiency in plasma derived medicinal products (PDMPs) was reported at only:
- 26 percent for Immunoglobulins
- 64 percent for Albumin
- 39 percent for Factor VIII
This reminds us that the PDMP access chain does not start at the fractionation plant.
It starts much earlier : in the community and among potential donors:
Awareness lead to Interest in plasma donation lead to Availability of collection centers lead to Plasma donation lead to PDMP manufacturing lead to Patient Access
Therefore, if we want to improve patient access to PDMPs, we need to look at these three factors together:
- Awareness about plasma donation
- Interest in donating plasma
- Accessibility of plasma donation centers
All together. All connected. For greater patient access to plasma derived medicines.”
