Berenice Villegas: The Role of Morphologic Evaluation in Body Fluid Differential Analysis
Berenice Villegas, Medical Laboratory Scientist at HCA Healthcare, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Body Fluid Differential: Morphologic Evaluation
One of the specimens processed in the hematology laboratory is body fluid, where microscopic evaluation can provide important information about the cellular composition of the specimen.
In this smear, there is a marked predominance of neutrophils, along with mononuclear cells, including macrophage/monocyte-type cells and larger cells compatible with mesothelial cells.
The differential cell count and morphologic evaluation of body fluids are important components of laboratory testing, particularly when evaluating inflammatory processes and other clinical conditions.
As a Medical Laboratory Scientist, I enjoy these cases because they combine cell morphology, clinical correlation, and laboratory expertise.”
