Sarah Alam: ASH 2026 Guidelines on Iron Deficiency Diagnosis and Updated Ferritin Thresholds
Sarah Alam, Consultant Endocrinology at Canadian Specialist Hospital, Dubai, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The American Society of Hematology (ASH) has released its 2026 evidence based guidelines for diagnosing iron deficiency, introducing updated ferritin thresholds:
Children (9 months to 4 years): low 20 ng mL
Adults, including menstruating and pregnant individuals: low 30 ng mL
High risk groups, including heavy menstrual bleeding and pregnant individuals with anemia: 50 ng mL
Adults with inflammation: Ferritin low 100 ng mL or transferrin saturation (TSAT) low 20 percent, interpreted in the appropriate clinical context.
These updated guidelines provide stronger scientific justification for identifying iron deficiency and supporting appropriate treatment.
