Hauke Horstmann: Can an Existing Drug Be Repurposed to Treat Atherosclerosis?

Hauke Horstmann, Postdoctoral Fellow at NYU Langone Health, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Nature Communications, adding:

”Excited to share our work, now published in Nature Communications!

Can an existing drug be repurposed to treat atherosclerosis?

By integrating gene regulatory network analysis with experimental and clinical data, we identified auranofin, a drug traditionally used for rheumatoid arthritis, as a promising therapeutic candidate.

The key finding: Auranofin reduced atherosclerosis in preclinical models, while its use was associated with lower cardiovascular risk in patients.

Congratulations to Letizia Amadori, Chiara Giannarelli, and the entire team on this important work!”
