Lee Anne Sorto: Beyond Compliance – Making Audits Count in Transfusion Safety

Lee Anne Sorto, Independent Consultant at Sorto Medical Consulting, LLC, shared a post on LinkedIn:

” ‘Many hands make light work.’

That saying has followed me throughout my life, and today at AABB 2026, I was reminded of it again.

I was incredibly proud to serve as Program Chair alongside Chandler Purser, Urvi Bhula, and Allison Myers for our session on Audits That Matter.

With less than a month before AABB, these colleagues stepped forward to help ensure this important discussion could still happen. And what came together was more than a presentation. It was a conversation about changing how we think about auditing in transfusion safety and Patient Blood Management.

An audit should not exist simply because an accreditation standard tells us to perform one.

The real value comes when an audit helps us:

  • See what is actually happening at the bedside
  • Identify meaningful patient-safety risks
  • Engage our clinical partners
  • Closes the feedback loop, and
  • Drives measurable change in practice

For TSOs, PBM Coordinators, and PBM Managers, that distinction matters.

I am grateful to these colleagues for stepping up, sharing their expertise, and reminding me once again what can happen when people rally around work that matters.

Many hands really do make light work, and sometimes they make better work, too.”
