M. Sekip Altunkan: Can Anticoagulation Be Safely Stopped After AF Ablation?
M. Sekip Altunkan, Associate Professor and Internal Medicine Specialist at a Private Medical Practice, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Retiring the Blood Thinner: ALONE-AF Reassesses Anticoagulation After Successful Ablation
If catheter ablation successfully silences atrial fibrillation without recurrence, must patients still swallow a blood thinner every single morning?
A post-hoc analysis of the randomized ALONE-AF trial in Heart Rhythm reveals that discontinuing oral anticoagulants did not increase stroke or systemic embolism rates, even among individuals categorized as high-risk by CHA2DS2-VASc scoring.
With all major bleeding events occurring exclusively in patients who continued therapy, this milestone challenges lifelong empiric anticoagulation in favor of personalized, surveillance-guided cessation.
