Annie Bauzon: Clinical Significance and Causes of RBC Anisocytosis
Annie Bauzon, Medical Laboratory Assistant Technician at Med Health Laboratories, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Anisocytosis of RBC
Anisocytosis refers to the presence of red blood cells (RBCs) of unequal sizes in a peripheral blood smear. It is commonly seen in various types of anemia and indicates abnormal erythropoiesis or RBC maturation.
Key Features:
- Increased variation in RBC size.
- Reflected by an increased RDW (Red Cell Distribution Width).
- May show microcytes, macrocytes, or a mixed population of RBCs.
- Best detected on a peripheral blood smear and automated hematology analyzers.
Common Causes:
- Iron deficiency anemia
- Megaloblastic anemia (Vitamin B12 and Folate deficiency)
- Thalassemia
- Hemolytic anemia
- Liver disease
- Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)
- Post blood transfusion”
